Don’t let the 5th of May pass by like any other day of the year. Follow these steps for a Cinco de Mayo done right!
Step 1: Brush up on the history. Many Americans mistakenly believe that Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day. However, the May holiday is actually in remembrance of the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in which they were outnumbered three to one. In the U.S., the holiday has become a celebration of Mexican heritage and culture focusing on traditional food, drink, and plenty of fun.
Step 2: Make a mole sauce. Try your culinary hand at this authentic and versatile dish. The ingredients are diverse but the resulting flavor is worthy of the effort it takes.
Step 3: Enjoy an adult beverage. Choose a favorite Mexican beer or a fresh twist on a classic margarita and celebrate! (Responsibly, of course. Most beverages are also delicious made alcohol-free!)
Step 4: Take a tour of Puebla, Mexico. Can’t break away from your desk for a quick Mexican vacation? No problem. Check out this beautiful virtual tour of Puebla, the Mexican city at the heart of Cinco de Mayo.
Step 5: Get crafty with a piñata. It’s not just for kids—though they’ll surely want to join in the fun! Try this step-by-step guide to get you started. Fill it up with small toys, trinkets, or coins, then step back and have a whack at it! (Which may double as a stress relieving activity!)
Step 6: Get your feet moving. Dancing is a big part of the Cinco de Mayo celebration. If you don’t have a mariachi band or a set of maracas nearby, perhaps some of these songs will inspire you to get up and get moving.
Step 7: Have fun! No matter how you celebrate, don’t miss the opportunity to unwind with good friends, good family, and good fun.
What are your Cinco de Mayo plans?
